BowFlex 552i vs 1090i: Which Adjustable Dumbbells Suit Your Home Gym?

Adjustable dumbbells solve one of the most obvious problems in a home gym: a traditional dumbbell rack takes up a lot of floor space. BowFlex’s SelectTech 552i and 1090i approach that problem in a similar way, but they are aimed at noticeably different strength levels.

The biggest difference is the weight range

The 552i adjusts from 2 kg to 24 kg per dumbbell across 15 selectable settings. The 1090i extends from 4 kg to 41 kg per dumbbell across 17 settings. That extra 17 kg at the top end is the defining reason to consider the 1090i.

For general home fitness, accessory work and moderate dumbbell training, 24 kg per hand can cover a surprisingly large number of movements. More advanced lifters, particularly those using dumbbells for presses, rows and heavier lower-body exercises, are more likely to benefit from the 1090i’s additional capacity.

Space efficiency

Both systems replace a large number of fixed dumbbells with a single adjustable pair and storage trays. The 552i measures approximately 43 × 21.2 × 22.8 cm per dumbbell, while the 1090i is approximately 44.4 × 24.2 × 25.3 cm.

Where the 552i makes more sense

The 552i is the more approachable choice when compactness, lighter starting weights and broad everyday training matter more than maximum load. Its 2 kg starting point also makes it better suited to exercises where small loads are useful.

Where the 1090i makes more sense

The 1090i is designed around progression. A 41 kg maximum per hand gives substantially more headroom before a stronger user outgrows the system. The trade-off is a larger, heavier dumbbell.
